NIGERIA MOVES TO TRANSFORM FOOD SYSTEMS FROM FARM TO TABLE
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) have reported that plans are being finalized to transform global food systems from production to consumption through integrated projects in the Kebbi and Niger States of Nigeria. This initiative aligns with the 2022-2027 National Agricultural Technology and Innovation Policy (NATIP), aiming to create sustainable, regenerative, nature-positive, resilient, inclusive, and pollution-free food systems. At a workshop in Abuja, FAO Country Representative, Dominique K. Kouacou commended the government’s efforts to diversify Nigeria’s economy through agricultural development towards achieving food security. He highlighted the significant impact of food systems on global environmental issues, such as deforestation, biodiversity loss, and greenhouse gas emissions.
The project is expected to focus on strengthening food systems governance, introducing sustainability standards, and providing financial incentives for system transformation. At the event, the Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Iziaq Salako, emphasized the workshop’s objective of introducing stakeholders to the program and outlining the project preparation process to ensure food security amid crises like natural resource degradation and climate change.
Kebbi State Commissioner for Agriculture, Shehu Muazu also stressed the need for sustainable food and agriculture to balance demands and meet the needs of present and future generations.
Glytabs Consulting looks forward to the impact of this project in the quest for transformation of the agri-food system in this part of Nigeria, especially in reversing the present trend of food hyperinflation in the country.
