ZERO HUNGER BY 2030: A GOAL IN JEOPARDY

A recent report by United Nations agencies reveals that one in 11 people worldwide faced hunger last year, indicating a significant shortfall in achieving Zero Hunger by the 2030 goal. (agri-pulse.com) The report emphasizes the need for transformative changes in agrifood systems and increased investment in rural agriculture to address persistent hunger.

According to the report, 733 million people experienced hunger in 2023, and 713-757 million were undernourished, lacking sufficient dietary energy for an active, healthy life. Despite the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 2, the world seems to have regressed, with undernourishment levels comparable to those in 2008-2009.

Of serious concern is that the report notes that hunger rates rose in Africa, from 19.9% in 2022 to 20.4% in 2023; 2.33 billion people faced moderate to severe food insecurity in 2023; 2.8 billion people couldn’t afford a healthy diet in 2022, representing about 35% of the global population, while economic challenges such as high food prices and other factors have continued to contribute to increased obesity and malnutrition.

To address these issues, the report calls for a strengthening of agrifood systems, addressing inequalities, and ensuring affordable and accessible healthy diets.

Glytabs Consulting joins the UN Representative in urging for increased investment, improved coordination, and risk-tolerant funding to address the global hunger crisis.
