World Food Day 2025 Calls for Unity to Build a Better Food Future

The world came together on October 16 to mark World Food Day 2025 under the theme “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future.” The commemoration, which also marked the 80th anniversary of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), renewed the global call for unity in building food systems that nourish people and sustain the planet.
In his address at the global event in Rome, His Holiness Pope Leo XIV decried the continued use of food as a weapon of war, describing it as a contradiction to the principles of justice and humanity. He urged world leaders to recommit themselves to peace and cooperation as the foundation for global food security. The celebration, attended by global dignitaries and development partners, echoed one central truth: that ending global hunger requires every nation to work hand in hand, bridging divides and sharing innovations that make food systems more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable.
In Nigeria, the urgency of this year’s message is underscored by findings from the latest Cadre Harmonisé report, jointly released by the Government of Nigeria, FAO, and Food Security Sector partners. The report reveals that over 30.6 million Nigerians remain at risk of food insecurity, a sobering reminder that achieving food and nutrition security requires stronger national commitment, targeted investments, and coordinated action across all sectors.
This year’s World Food Day also featured the inauguration of the Food and Agriculture Museum & Network (FAO MuNe) and the “Global Exhibition: From Seeds to Foods”, both designed to showcase how innovation, education, and collaboration can transform food systems from the ground upwards.
