Reimagining Cassava Processing in Nigeria with Roff’s Hammer Mill

Nigeria, as the world’s largest producer of cassava, continues to attract global attention for its immense potential in agro-processing and value addition. Cassava remains central to national food security, serving as a source of nutrition, income, and industrial raw material. Yet, despite this potential, limited access to affordable processing technologies has slowed the pace of transformation among smallholder farmers and processors, to the extent that the paradox is that the country is not on today’s world map of starch producers!
In a bold move to address these constraints, Roff Milling, one of Africa’s foremost manufacturers of compact and commercial milling equipment, recently unveiled its Cassava Hammer Mill System, a turnkey solution designed to process dried cassava roots into fine flour with remarkable efficiency. With a processing capacity of 500–750 kilograms per hour, the system promises to empower entrepreneurs, cooperatives, and small millers seeking to enter or expand cassava flour processing. Compact and modular, it promises reliability, cost-effectiveness, and scalability, which are crucial for driving local processing industries.
While this is an encouraging innovation for Africa’s cassava value chain, it is our hope that such technologies will be readily available and affordable to Nigerian farmers and processors when introduced locally. It would be counterproductive to develop innovations that remain out of reach for the very people who need them most. As highlighted in the Lead Presentation on “Strengthening Public-Private Partnerships in Nigeria’s Food Processing Sector” made by Prof. Olugbenga Ogunmoyela during the 49th NIFST Conference, the government can play a pivotal role by establishing agro-processing hubs and providing solar-powered technologies to support small and medium-scale farmers. Such efforts will not only reduce production costs but also enhance productivity, promote cleaner energy use, and stimulate inclusive economic growth.
Surely, technology is only ever as powerful as its accessibility and impact. This is why as an Agriculture, Food, and Nutrition Consulting company, we operate in the broad areas of Agribusiness, Food Systems, Health and Nutrition, Policy, and Regulatory Compliance. We will therefore continue to be committed to advancing innovations that are practical, affordable, and sustainable. We are also driving excellence, innovation, and sustainability in the food value chain in Nigeria and Africa by proffering personalized advisory, technical, and qualitative solutions to challenges that arise in the quest for achieving business growth.
Roff’s cassava innovation is definitely a step in the right direction, and as Nigeria strengthens its position as the world’s leading cassava producer, it is imperative that such technological advancements truly reach and benefit the farmers and processors who form the backbone of our nation’s food system with an increased focus and emphasis on value addition.
